Scholarship Description:

HRSA scholarship are offered through the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship Program (SP) to students who are pursuing careers in primary care health professions and who agree to work in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA)  after graduation.

The data provided by applicants will be used to determine whether or not they meet the requirements to join the NHSC SP. Information gathered from outside sources will also be taken into account (e.g., credit bureau reports). Health and Human Services (HHS) employees will use this system of records to keep track of everyone involved with the NHSC SP, including contracts, applications, supplementary forms, supporting documents, correspondence, and data.

This program encourages diversity in the health professions by giving grants to nursing and health professions programs that qualify, enabling programs to offer scholarships to underprivileged students who have a proven financial need and are enrolled full-time in a nursing or health professions program.

The responsibility for choosing scholarship recipients, reasonably determining needs, and awarding scholarships that do not exceed allowable costs (such as tuition, reasonable educational expenses, and reasonable living expenses, with a cap on the total scholarship award of $ 40,000) rests with participating schools.

About The Host Institution

The mission of the Bureau of Health Workforce (BHW) is to enhance the well-being of those who are most in need of medical care. They improve the availability of healthcare professionals in underserved areas and hence help to build the health workforce.

• A postgraduate degree or postgraduate certificate from a school or program in nurse-midwifery education, physician assistant (PA) education, or nurse practitioner (NP) education

Scholarship Benefits:

In exchange for at least two years of full-time service, participants in the NHSC Scholars Program (NSHC SP) receive a monthly stipend to aid with living expenses as well as payment for tuition and a variety of other education-related charges that are considered to be acceptable.

Each academic year, qualified students are entitled to $40,000, provided that all other conditions are satisfied. This amount covers the following:

Eligibility For HRSA:

You should only apply to be an NHSC scholar if you are serious about a career in primary care and are willing to move to underserved areas where NHSC has a need. All scholarship applicants must meet the following requirements to be considered:

• You must be a citizen of the United States (either naturalized or born in the United States): NHSC scholarships are available to citizens and nationals of the United States, but applicants must provide evidence of their citizenship or nationality. The identifying page of a valid U.S. passport, a certificate of citizenship or naturalization, or a copy of a birth certificate issued by a city, county, or state government in the United States all qualify as acceptable forms of identification.
• You must be enrolled for a full-time course: Have full-time student status through enrolling or acceptance in any of the following courses: Physician, Dentist, Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, and Physician Assistant.
• You must attend or have been accepted to any of the following reputable institutions:
  • A school of allopathic or osteopathic medicine, pursuing an M.D. or D.O. degree; and Accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (sponsored by the American Medical Association and the Association of American Medical Colleges) or the American Osteopathic Association, Commission on Osteopathic College
    Accreditation.
  • A school of dentistry, pursuing a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree; and Accredited by the American Dental Association, Commission on Dental Accreditation.
  • A school or program of nurse practitioner education, pursuing a postgraduate degree

• You must attend a school that is either located in a state, the District of Columbia, or one of the territories that make up the United States:  Schools and educational programs that are eligible to receive scholarship support must be located in a state. This requirement applies to all 50 states; the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the United States Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia. Students who are citizens or nationals of the United States but attend schools that are located outside of these geographic areas are not eligible for NHSC scholarships, even if they are from the United States.
• You must be eligible for federal employment: It is expected that the majority of NHSC Scholars would fulfil their service requirements as salaried, non-federal workers of public or private entities recognized by the NHSC SP. On the other hand, there may be openings that necessitate a security clearance and federal employment.
• A full application: You must submit an online application, a resume, two recommendation letters, a report confirming acceptance or enrollment in good standing at an appropriate health professions institution, and official transcripts are all required from each applicant. You must also complete three (3) essay questions.
