Scholarship Description:
The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program was established in 1999 and is funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The goal of the program is to provide exceptional students of African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American descent with the opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline or area of interest.
What the GMS Program offers is much more than financial aid. To promote academic achievement, GMS provides its Gates Millennium Scholars with Academic Empowerment (ACE) programs, which include academic and personal mentorship as well as access to an online resource centre with details about internships, fellowships, and scholarships.
Those who are selected to continue in the Gates Millennium Scholars program have the opportunity to submit a funding request for a graduate degree program in one of the following fields: computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health, or science.
For 20,000 exceptional students of colour, the organizers advocate for academic excellence, provide opportunities, and lower financial barriers.

Gates Millennium Scholarship Requirements (Eligibility):
- Outstanding Academic Records; A minimum GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
- Leadership abilities
- Must be a high school senior
- Must be from one of the following ethnicities: American Indian/Alaska Native, African-American, Asian & Pacific Islander American, and/or Hispanic American
- A US citizen, national, or permanent resident.
Documents Needed:
There will be several stages throughout the application process where students will be asked to upload the following materials:
- Updated academic transcript(s) (to be submitted by the school counsellor).
- Student Aid Report (SAR), once the FAFSA has been completed.
- Financial Aid Award Letter.
- Admission Letter into a four-year undergraduate program in an accredited school.
- Passport photograph.
- Resume.

Does Gate the scholarship program provide graduate funding?
Gates Millennium Scholars who wish to continue their study can apply for funding to pursue graduate degrees in one of the following disciplines: computer science, education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health, or science. To use your Gates Millennium Scholars award, you must enrol in an approved university in the United States. Only current Gates Scholars who are enrolled in graduate courses are eligible to receive funds.
How Much is the scholarship?
The scholarship does not have a specific amount, students with demonstrated financial need who are chosen to participate in the Gates Millennium Scholars program will be awarded funding in an amount that will be set by GMS which is determined by the total cost of the academic year, including tuition, fees, books, and living expenses. Additionally, consideration is given to the availability of grants and other scholarships, which are detailed in the student’s financial aid award letter.
Undergraduate students who maintain satisfactory academic achievement, full-time enrolment, and on-time submission of essential documentation are eligible to have their scholarship for that level of study renewed on an annual basis.

GMS does not send out login information such as usernames and passwords by email due to security concerns.
Can I use my Scholarship in the UK?
The Gates Millennium Scholars Program provides funding for undergraduate study in any field of study at any approved U.S. institution.
What are the selection criteria for the scholarship?
The first thing that was considered when determining whether or not an application was successful was whether or not it contained all of the necessary components, which are as follows: a student application, a Nominator Form, and a Recommender Form. Students’ potential for leadership, as well as their academic achievements, community service, and other activities, were taken into consideration while making admissions decisions; however, no one aspect alone decides who gets admitted.
