Robertson Scholarship Description:

This scholarship was established as a homage to the late Robert G. Robertson, and it is presented to undergraduate students who have excelled in their academics and showed attributes of leadership in their extracurricular activities.

Julian and Josie pushed for the establishment of the undergraduate scholarship and it was first awarded in the year 2000. Students awarded this scholarship will have the unique opportunity to take advantage of the resources available at both Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The Robertson Scholarship is widely considered to be one of the most prestigious awards presented annually to a select group of the United States’ most talented high school seniors.  Students who originate from low-income homes and have a demonstrated need for financial assistance are the primary recipients of this program.

The scholarship will cover all of the expenses associated with an undergraduate education in the United States, including tuition, lodging and board, fees, and textbooks, for a maximum of four years of study at an accredited university, vocational school, or college.

The Robertson Scholars Program is a collaborative undergraduate scholarship initiative between the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University. On each site, there is coordinating staff to assist with the administration of the program, which includes providing academic advising to the students. Every year, in each school, there are a total of eighteen students who are selected to become Robertson Scholars.

Eligibility: Robertson Scholarship Requirements

Students of all citizenships and nationalities may apply, but you must meet the eligibility criteria listed below

  • minimum 3.0 GPA after the first semester at UNC or Duke
  • Applicants must not be a trandsCannot be a transfer student
  • Current Merit Scholars at Duke are not eligible
  • You Must be enrolled full-time in the Host University
  • You must only students in their first-year/freshman year of study
  • Merit Scholars at UNC whose scholarship does not cover full tuition, room and board and fees may apply for the Robertson
  • Students with other scholarships may apply
  • Students may apply regardless of whether they applied as High School students
  • Letter of recommendation must be from a current faculty member at UNC or Duke

Benefiting from this scholarship is like having “dual citizenship” at both Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill. Moreover, a hundred thousand applications (direct and referral) are submitted annually to the two colleges, and only about twenty-five to thirty pupils are accepted. This is to say that the Robertson scholarship acceptance rate is not high, only the best students are invited.

Is the Robertson scholarship a full ride?

Yes, Scholars who participate in the Robertson Scholars Leadership Program get free tuition, lodging and board, and coverage of the majority of their necessary expenses for a total of eight semesters at Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill.

What does the Robertson scholarship look for?

Although there is no such thing as a “typical” Robertson Scholar, all those who have been awarded the scholarship have demonstrated the following qualities: leadership with a mission, moral fortitude, intellectual curiosity, and a willingness to work together. When is the application deadline due?

For an application to be taken into consideration, all of the required paperwork, including both recommendation letters, must be delivered before the deadline of November 15 at midnight. Students are strongly encouraged to submit their applications to our program directly before the November 15th deadline.
